What a wonderful morning here in New England. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the outdoor stray cats are sleeping in the morning sun. We went through a wet spell this last week which was good since the rain barrels got refilled and the garden got a nice healthy drink. As much as we appreciate the rain, we now needed some nice sun to make everything grow, and today we got exactly what we asked for (although I think it is supposed to rain later). Anyway, as we were hanging out the laundry to dry in the warm sun we noticed that our strawberry patch was red with berries.

There are few things better than a fresh picked sun-warmed strawberry, and this year promises to be a good year for our patch. This is the first full year since we moved the strawberry patch to the larger old garden bed, and believe me, it seems to like the bigger area. We had been eating store-bought berries from California which were good, but now that we have fresh berries we can really tell the difference. The berries from our garden are red all the way through, and not over-hard, mushy, or have sour under-ripe spots; and you can’t beat the price. If the season is good we should have berries for almost a month.
Don’t have room to grow your own strawberries but still want fresh local berries? Why not find a local pick-your-own place in your area. I know here in New England they are all over the place, and we have tried a couple in years past and have found it to be a fun time especially if you plan on spending a few hours in fields picking and enjoying the day. The prices are usually comparable to the berries in the store, plus you know they are all good (you picked them so why would pick a bad one), fresh and local and don’t come with any extra packaging.
So, why not enjoy the day and go pick some local strawberries while they are now in season; you will find it fun, enjoyable and definitely delicious, plus you will be helping a local farmer. Then again, this is just Life according to Troy.
