As humans living in our human-engineered houses where the air is conditioned and we can turn night into day at the flip of a switch we easily forget that we are still part of nature. Sure, we can all see that outside our carefully structured and controlled bubbles that we have created for ourselves is the wildness of nature, but do we truly realize that we too are nature. Don’t believe me? What did you eat/drink today? Where did that food come from? (If you said “the grocery store”, consider yourself slapped on the back of the head.) It came from nature. Sure some of it is further from nature then other things, but ultimately everything that you ate came from nature. If everything you put into your body came from nature, then are you not nature? You are what you eat as they say. And it doesn’t stop with your food. Look around you and your current human-engineered environment. What do you see? Where did all this stuff come from? (Don’t make me do it again!). It all came from nature of course. Ok, most of this stuff is in a state that isn’t immediately recognizable as nature, but it still is. Let me take the computer you are most likely staring at to read this. It is made of plastic, a man-made product correct? Wrong! Humans just took decayed dinosaur remains (aka petroleum) and other raw materials from the nature and combined them to make plastic. All those wires, batteries and metal all are made from materials that ultimately come from nature. Simply put, despite the apparent human need to try to get away from nature, we are still part of it in everyway.
Why does it matter that we recognize that we are part of nature? Let me put it this way, if someone comes into your house (your world if you will), and starts taking over your house by using more than his/her share of your stuff what would you do? You would most likely take steps to either regain a balance with that person or kick that person out of your house. Why wouldn’t ‘Mother nature’ do the same? All the odd weather and severe storms could be subtle hints to start sharing. Despite our supposed control over our environments, I think we all know the basic rule of nature: ‘Nature has a way of continuing to exist’, and unfortunately nature does not care about what species have to be ‘thrown off the planet’ for that to happen. So, as we celebrate Mother’s day and you are spending some extra time with your mother, please remember ‘Mother Earth’ and the fact that we are nature. Happy Mother’s day.
