Is there anything better than a sun-warmed strawberry picked right from the vine? If you haven’t had the opportunity to enjoy this treat, now is your chance. Strawberries are in season right now and are perfect for the picking. My wife and her parents found a farm that allowed us to pick our own berries and it was a really fun experience since you get to pick (and eat) as much as you want while chatting and just enjoying being together. Pick-your-own farms are becoming more popular so you should be able to find one in your area. We ended up getting about 26 pounds (plus what we ate) of strawberries all for under $34. That is about $1.30 a pound. Try to beat that price in any grocery store especially considering you got to pick only the perfect berries and weren’t paying for any rotten ones hidden under the good ones.
So, what do you do with 26 pounds of strawberries? Well, you have strawberry shortcake of
course! Well, ok, that didn’t use very many of them, so my wife and I ended up making strawberry jam out of the majority of them. We ended up with 14 pints of canned jam, and 7 pints of freezer jam. That will be some good jam come winter when you are dying for the taste of spring! And to top it all off, we still had enough for a huge bowl full of cut up berries to eat fresh this week. That was quite a bargain.
So, what is the big deal, you can get strawberries year round in the grocery store right? You are right about that, but I guarantee you these in season berries have a lot more flavor then any of the berries you purchase in the winter that have been grown in some foreign land, picked before they are ripe and then forced to ripen on some truck. One of problems our society faces is that we think we have a right to have any food we want anytime we want it just because it is physically possible. We need to get back in tune with the natural cycle of our food. Just by doing this simple thing we can save a lot of energy and resource simply because our food won’t have to be grown under special conditions and shipped to us from the entire world just so we can have a ‘fresh’ strawberry in the winter.
So, get out there and enjoy the strawberries while they are in season; believe me you will taste the difference. Then again, this is just life according to Troy.
